Therapeutic Effects of Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) Juice on Liver of Diabetic Mice

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a serious metabolic disorder. Pomegranate has various biological effects. The present study evaluated pomegranate juice (PJ) therapeutic effects on the liver of Streptozotocin (STZ) induced DM mice model. Fifty male were distributed into 5 equal groups (10 each). Groups negative control, PJ group received orally (180 mg/kg), diabetic STZ (60 (STZ+PJ) group, metformin (250 mg/kg) (STZ+MET) group. experiment duration was 6 weeks. Initial and final body weights measured. At experimental end, blood glucose levels enzymes serum as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) A histological examination made under light microscope. led to significant decreased in weight, an increase AST, ALT, ALP versus control. administration significantly but AST still elevated Histopathological PJ-and MET-treated showed amelioration changes DM. Metformin repairs damaged hepatic cells not effective PJ. In conclusion, improves health mice.
